....Vestas Building

Medina at Kingston....

Bearing in mind the original reason for the establishment of the Association was to protect and further the interests of the users of the River Medina, we very much have an interest in development proposals affecting the estuary. As such, we try and keep a close eye on planning applications and any other proposals that potentially affect leisure activity in the area.

We all have a concern about visual impact on the river. We do recognise however the industrial heritage of the Medina and that the superb natural estuary environment has now been spoilt in certain areas. In line with our charitable objectives, whilst we inevitably have concerns about visual impact, we view planning applications and other proposals primarily in terms of whether or not they will adversely affect or enhance leisure activities.

An example is the Vestas R & D building that now resides at the end of Stag Lane. Most people accept that this is an eyesore on the middle section of the estuary, although what was there before was not exactly picturesque! Our concern was its proximity to the river, and its sheer size affecting wind conditions and therefore sailing conditions on that part of the river. We also had concerns about its close proximity to the Cowes to Newport cycle path and crossing traffic.

We are, of course, always happy to have the views of our members and others on any proposals that affect the area.
